do no harm:

idit dobb-weinstein: "teaching is action and thinking at once. What I try to guard against most when I teach is not speaking as if my answer were conclusive, so as to avoid (to the extent possible) any kind of dogmatic appropriation. It is understandable why students might wish to imitate their teachers, but there are different modes of imitation. I try very hard to avoid the mimetic appropriation that is immediate, passive, and occludes thinking. One other reason is that if I made clear what my views were, and my views appeared as if they were final, it would preclude the possibility of first, students challenging me and second, learning from my students. The relation between the student and teacher is, to me, a dynamic relationship . . . Teaching and learning is a movement that occurs between. In other words, we are at once both agent and patient, both teacher and learner. If we are not very careful, we can do a great deal of harm. And that, too, I have learned from my teachers, Maimonides especially.

I believe my task is to provoke students to think and to engage them in genuine dialogue and questioning. To paraphrase a rabbinic saying, 'I have learned from my teachers, and I have learned from my peers, but I have learned most from my students.' And that is a continuous process of learning."

rate my professor

i was thinking of catching some more classes at LACC and realize i am put off by the bad energy emitting from  . . .

but hey

these posts at rate my prof say it way better than i could:
This professor seems to think that, even though his class is for college students, he is talking to postdocs and frequently starts yelling when people don't know the answers to his, often times absurdly questions. To make matters worse he creates an atmosphere so tense in the class, nobody wants to answer him - which led him to get furious. There's no way of tracing your grade and really no way of knowing what he wants. He also has a huge ego, and doesn't respect students at all. He is a very unpleasant man. He made me question the validity of the entire discipline of anthropology. Avoid him like a plague. I have never ever felt so discouraged by a teacher. He is condescending. This is the worst teacher I ever had.The worst professor ever. I will never take any class with this teacher again even if they guarantee me an admission for Anthropology school.I took Bartelt this semester, but I wouldn't take him again. This guy is not an easy professor dudes; plus he uses his class as a sort of psychotherapy. He is rude and talks down to everyone. ohh and please dont have any kind of opinion because if it does not correspond to his you will regret saying it. But he thinks that he is always right and you are wrong. NOT a good experience.Although I received a B in this course, I have to say, this professor is extremely inappropriate, rude, and useless.Worst instructor I ever had.He is very arrogant and self-centered. Students felt intimidated to make question because he knows everything.Worst professor ever :( his attitude is a turnoff to most peoplebe careful if you are a good student just do your work and don't mess around; he has a really bad reputation at school. He does not behave as a professor. He uses school and students.he does not respect students. He is always yelling out. DO NOT TAKE HIM. I made a big mistake.his arrogant personalityDon't take Bartelt!!! He knows a lot, but he has no respect for his students.Kind of moody too.he is intimidating and sometimes meanProf has a horrible attitude w students. He doesnt treat us well because he assumes ALL of us are lazy.Students dont participate because he intimidates us.He replies to questions as if we were stupid. He's disorganized and lectures have lots of grammatical issues that make it uncomprehensible.Horrible profdownside of Bartelt is that he is VERY narrow-minded with his opinions and is EASILY enraged when a student doesn't accept them
