i got the rush transcript of layla fernandez'a collegian article on discrimination.
i applaud her heroic attempts to help the LACC community remember that the educational process extends far beyond the course work.
education is a life long endeavor affecting many aspects of human communication and understanding.
the critical issues all systems of power face are:
Internet---free speech accountability documentation hypercommunicative aspects of young people's online behavior
the collapse of authority---in the face of new information systems old information systems must adapt or be doomed to irrelevance
women---in the future we will not be harassed, underpaid, raped, discriminated against, underpaid, beaten, and cursed at. we will not be the butt of your jokes. you will not treat us unfairly in the classroom or anywhere else.
if you lie to hide your verbal abuse, the ethical karma will find you somewhere where you least expect it.
if as bartelt felt, his free speech permitted him to shout woman! tits! tits and ass! bitching! asshole! in the classroom-----
any defender of free speech would also defend my right to blog the transcript of the proceedings.

that is a lie, because truth is a defense to libel---he could learn that in lewis' communications law class in the paralegal department.
if it really happened and i reported it---it is not libel or slander.

numerous witnesses as well as his own audio defense on soundcloud confirm the truth of those epithets being uttered in class.
he admitted and defended their use.

i think it is slanderous to speak of women in such a way, which is why i asked him to be more respectful in the first place.
he could have said, "thanks, good point!"
instead of put up a big fight. oh war like spirits in struggles of wits.
he's lucky he still has a job in this economy.
things are getting more competetive these days.
and if he thinks cursing at women----or eckford thinks cursing at me---looks good on his resume---
well . . .
they might be wrong.
hopefully if all the administrators are illiterate good old boys then it will all be swept under the rug
i just dont see how defending being rude and sexist in the classroom makes him seem cool. i think it would be way cooler to be respectful all the time.
not to mention in compliance with civil rights act of 1964 title IX.
but LACC is too illiterate to read the laws under which they extract federally supported salary----
so at that point, i just feel sorry for everyone involved, women and men alike

dear cristy passman ombudsman for discrim/harass at LACC
i spoke with your assistant today about my letters the past few months requesting my graded exam and graded islamophobia project, for which anthropology teacher brian bartelt graded me "C" to punish me for questioning the use in the classroom of the vulgarities "tits and ass" and "asshole" and "bitching"and treating women poorly in the classroom.
he shouted at me "woman" as well as saying "we dont want to wig anyone out" when i critiqued his "transvestites teach real women how to be real women" argument.
he also said he has "no sympathy for anorexia and bulimia."
eckford sociology chair tried to kick me out of anthropology for my stance towards equality, and defended the use of the words, repeated them and other even more vulgar words to my face in my presence which forced me to seek legal counsel, who he then cursed at saying he would "hang up on your dumb ass" and that my attorney could "go jump in a stream," a suicide metaphor i believe.
then i received a "C."
please send the coursework in defense of the "C"
you will recall that i reported numerous other professors used sexual epithets in the classroom, especially in the paralegal department, and that you protected them in those
instances as well, even though the abuse was so bad it affected women studies, or caused them to drop out of classes and avoid certain professors.

23 november update:
correspondence following a collegian interview for a LACC school newspaper on administration-protected verbal abuse and retaliation. i spoke with layla fernandez, reporter for the collegian this morning tuesday november 2010. my friend richard ray is a wonderful musician and Dj who is now assisting cristy passman. i have to admit that the excess of paperwork and processing of all the many instances of sexism and racism on the campus at LACC needs more staff! so in a way, by directing the attention to the unsatisfactory performance of professors at LACC, and making a complaint with supervisory Dr. Burnett, as well as LACCD, and the state of California, and the federal Office of Civil Rights, it seems things are getting shaken up a bit. and while i never was paid a penny for my activism, it looks like a friend got a job! so if that is what it takes, all the internet and youtubes and blogs and emails and phone calls and photocopies at kinkos have done something positive for somebody in particular.
not to mention women.
maybe we will be able to go to school one day and be totally respected, and treated completely equally and fairly, with no sexist banter from the white male voice of authority and privilege and salary and corruption.
TOTAL RESPECT!

interestingly, a court in Washington state ruled this past week that student teacher consensual adult relationships are verboten.

now the reason this pertains, is that lanzer repeatedly asked out an adult student, who then dropped out of his class.
and it was widely known that bartelt was dating a very beautiful young student as well.
and at which point the school becomes a place for predation is of concern. i bet she didn't get a "C" in cultural anthropology, because she didn't mind smoking pot and doing shrooms with burner in the desert. and i bet she didn't question his misogynistic language either.
submission is attractive to some people.
i bet she wasnt denied the chance to give her final presentation, as was I, in obvious retaliation.
nor was she threatened to be kicked out of anthroplogy by eckford, who cursed repeatedly in my presence and at my lawyer.
i'm guessing, she didn't have to go through any of this.
so, i of all people am pretty liberal, but if someone is being preyed on, and then grades are a part of the equation, and then other students grades are penalized for cultural differences (ie non-misogyny, or non-interest in polyphasic chemical states . . . well . . . maybe one should try match.com and leave the kids alone, and stop cursing at them too . . .)

look out for a new article in the collegian in about a week. who knows how good the writing will be or what level of distortion will show, but in showbiz
no publicity is bad publicity right?
the young writer seemed very concerned about the school protecting verbal abuse of women and grade retaliation when they complain.

"C" is for corruption . . .
Dear Cristy Passman, ombudsman for discrimination and harassment at Los Angeles City College,
Office of Civil Rights,
I have not yet received the graded Islamophobia Anthropology project and Final exam for which you and Bartelt gave/defend my grade of "C."
I acknowledge that you do not contend that this poor grade was retaliation for my concern regarding sexism in the classroom.
I received an "A" in biological anthropology which involved a lot of memorization in January 2010.
I studied for Cultural Anthropology beyond thoroughly and printed my extensive Islamophobia project.
As I previously requested, will you give me my final course work?
I printed and turned in my entire blogged notes and multiple drafts and copious research and would like this material back, along with my final exam.
I recognize that you do not agree that a "hostile atmosphere" contributed to grade retaliation or student performance.
I would however like "proof" of my poor performance and the grading method. I wrote to you about this months ago. You have ignored me.
I hope Bartelt has not destroyed the evidence, as he alleged he would burn our printed final projects in his back yard.
I was denied my final presentation to the class on multiple days, which i allege was from a mixture of misogyny and Islamophobia, issues which concern me greatly.

i do not think it was wrong of me to ask bartelt of the male bias in anthropology, or his way of making anthropology.
or even the etymology of it.
cleverly he responded or muddled through a distinction between greek anthropos

which was well taken and is the first thing you find upon etymological dissection of the term.
but the utterance of the historical phoneme entirely belies the total elision into anthropocentric world views in which anthropos is humanity, the general, humanos.
i asked this question to be quizzical, but also due to the tone, which dismissively reduces women to biological functions and the casualness with which he spoke of women humans: another example being, his extensive discussion of estrus, and his presumption of the female humans non-demonstration thereof, an unscientific assumption, on the spectrum.
at any rate, i thought, when i asked of male bias in anthropology, he would respond with knowledge of a serious body of work by women within anthropology who address this bias.
and in pointing at the etymological self-reflexivity of the anthropos as human (male as the general), he might acknowledge the obvious ironies implicit in our victorian vernaculars which sprung from colonial attitudes.
as if anthroplogy, were the opposite of women's studies.

they who purvey humiliation
i wonder which of the censorship-supporting professors at LACC would also support the wikileaks exposures. that would be funny on the one hand, to ask me to whitewash their mis-statements and misdeeds, and then from the other side of their mouths proclaim a victory for human rights on the internet. very fascinated lately with stieg larsson's novel men who hate women, man som hatar kvinnor.
i don't think anyone was especially hateful, but rather just ignorant and insensitive and verbally gauche. but someone like stieg larsson could see actual malicious evil at work in the world which linguistically humiliates women, and then also enacts physical violence upon them.
my optimism is overwhelmingly naff. really i ought to start believing in evil more. when i think of all the sexist epithets i heard at LACC, i cannot believe i'm still like anne frank, convinced that all humans are good at heart.
if only i could understand the banality of evil, then too i might understand the banality of LACC, or the torture of the war, or domestic violence and all verbal abuse.
i think i am coming closer to understanding darkness.
bartelt purportedly specializes in occult studies or witchcraft, which does not bother me.
i was quite concerned when he spoke in his thesis about the male magic circle to which he became initiated.
i felt concerned that he would undergo an indoctrination without an egalitarian framework, admittedly with critique, but nonetheless undergo it.
and then in addition to the animal sacrifice videos, one of a chicken being thrown into a fire, and another of a disembowelment of a living being with a human's bare hands, he brought in one of a woman.
the woman was undergoing a treatment by male practitioners. it was for some kind of malaise she experienced. and then she allowed the videotaping of this i assume.
what struck me as uncanny was the very male gaze of both the healer and the videographer. it did not seem critical of the ritual, or critical of her role as subject and patient. the underlying sexism of male dominated healing paradigms seemed to me off-putting. as if she was actually undergoing some finalizing propagandization of her subordination.
very victorian freud all over again.
as bartelt implied that the vegetarians who questioned the disembowelment (unanaesthetized too!) were racist against africa if we did not embrace animal torture as a religious practice----
he also too told us, that you cannot be an anthropologist and a vegetarian or vegan, and that you must eat the meat of the cultures you study.
olivia was quite profound to push the vegan envelope that day. i was not in the mood to be shouted at, so i said nothing, but merely wrote a few extra exclamation points.
something had changed for the worse.
in the winter term, i found it charming that bartelt made an avant-guarde statement about transsexuals being attractive. it seemed the kind of statement designed to freak out the republican army homophobic types.
but the day he asked the girl, what do women really want in a man?
i felt almost enough ill to say, how dare you presume, and hetero profile her, and how is this helping us learn anything?
but i gave him the extra points american men get against their cultural brainwashing into sexist insensitivity. i let it slide. like, "oh well he's an american" and that explains why he is sexist, insensitive, rude, etc.
sadly i have had too many lovely men in my life to abide by excessive rudeness!!!!!
my dad for instance was literally quoting coleridge at two a.m.
he was the poet . . . wan and suffering . . . extolling the genius of emily dickinson and charlotte bronte and mary shelley and mary wollstonecraft.
so a more football and "girls gone wild" or fratboy or blame the rape victim (lanzer) approach to women is completely profoundly declasse to me.
it streams through my mind like a horror novel.
and cristy passman's protection of the abuse is most disheartening.
she is probably too drunk on smog to know better. the older generation was not allowed to think independent thoughts. it makes me feel sorry for them, that their minds got eaten up by late night TV or whatever taught them to be so foul. other classmates? parents? cinema?
the choice of words is a delicate thing
can you imagine if emily dickinson or virginia woolf had to suffer through the t&a lecture? or the ridicule of anorexia and bulimia?
virginia woolf was kept out of school, by sexism.

is it as though los angeles is in such a collective mass state of megalomania such that every prating fool finds himself to be a genius? i think perhaps. the people there have egos worthy only of gods. every day is like the valhalla march, with egos so big, i can't believe they would allow themselves to say things so stupid.
i bet everything is better than it was there at that little school. there is nothing in between. just trees. trees and smog down to LA. and then poverty and horrors of insult and oppression.
i gave up on america long ago. one day bartelt spoke deridingly of europe, and i agree somewhat. but i love the culture of kindness to women. when have i ever experienced it???? so rare it is in fact, i cannot locate a place it was to have happened. even sweden has men who hate women, even if their laws most enshrine equality.
america has dismal governmental representation, dismal pay for women. and really to get any school or work here, you must have nerves of steel to endure the harassment, and verbal denigration.
such that all i really needed was a gold star . . . or some other way of making it plain how doomed we were before we even opened our mouths at LACC.

it streams through my mind like a horror novel.
and cristy passman's protection of the abuse is most disheartening.
she is probably too drunk on smog to know better. the older generation was not allowed to think independent thoughts. it makes me feel sorry for them, that their minds got eaten up by late night TV or whatever taught them to be so foul. other classmates? parents? cinema?
the choice of words is a delicate thing
can you imagine if emily dickinson or virginia woolf had to suffer through the t&a lecture? or the ridicule of anorexia and bulimia?
virginia woolf was kept out of school, by sexism.
if only she knew how retrogressive it might be.
she might be more happy reading greek in her dad's library.
but the entire aspect of not being taken seriously academically, intellectually, the offense of that stings and stings.
is it as though los angeles is in such a collective mass state of megalomania such that every prating fool finds himself to be a genius? i think perhaps. the people there have egos worthy only of gods. every day is like the valhalla march, with egos so big, i can't believe they would allow themselves to say things so stupid.
i bet everything is better than it was there at that little school. there is nothing in between. just trees. trees and smog down to LA. and then poverty and horrors of insult and oppression.
i gave up on america long ago. one day bartelt spoke deridingly of europe, and i agree somewhat. but i love the culture of kindness to women. when have i ever experienced it???? so rare it is in fact, i cannot locate a place it was to have happened. even sweden has men who hate women, even if their laws most enshrine equality.
america has dismal governmental representation, dismal pay for women. and really to get any school or work here, you must have nerves of steel to endure the harassment, and verbal denigration.
such that all i really needed was a gold star . . . or some other way of making it plain how doomed we were before we even opened our mouths at LACC.
and at that point, it just seems like a lot of dogs barking at each other. for validation of course.
a more polite culture will not be found there.
the librarian, he never said a thing wrong to me there, where i'd go to read the daily journal.
and a dj in class, he was polite. and kam pek, he noticed how the women cast their eyes down, when bartelt said disrespectful things. he felt it. eric hamilton felt it. the girl who eckford made cry felt it. elizabeth felt it.
humiliation.
and most of all for its purveyor.
